Research Highlights on Patient Needs

Improve quality of discussions

Patients have difficulty remembering what they hear. Visuals can greatly improve the effectiveness of doctor-patient discussions.

Patients likely

overestimate their

knowledge.

Not realizing they know less than they should, they also likely overestimate their ability to participate in decision making. Research showed that while 96% of patients reported knowing their cancer (sub)type, only 46% could fully state what it was (n=484).

Only 33% of MBC patients felt they had enough knowledge to participate in decision making, indicating a new communication method was needed.

58% felt rushed and that starting treatment was urgent.

Only 24% got a second opinion.

71% did not recall goals and hobbies as part of pretreatment discussions.
